TCL 85C7L
Overview
Eighty-five inches of Mini LED panel, brightness reaching 3,000 nits, and full coverage of the BT.2020 color space: this large TCL television targets living rooms that demand a cinema-screen experience without switching to OLED. Its eighth-generation SQD backlighting brings refined light control, an HVA panel, and a sound section tuned by Bang & Olufsen, all running on Google TV.
The eighth-generation SQD Mini LED backlighting
The 85C7L is built on TCL’s eighth-generation Mini LED technology, called SQD. The principle: retaining blue diodes paired with high-concentration Super Quantum Dot crystals, rather than adopting red, green, and blue LEDs. With the same number of diodes, this approach multiplies the independent dimming zones, since an RGB triplet would occupy the space of three separate blue LEDs. On the 215 cm diagonal, this translates to 1,624 local dimming zones and a peak brightness rated at 3,000 nits.
The standout feature of this generation lies in color. TCL claims 100% coverage of the BT.2020 color space — a first for Mini LED backlighting without RGB LEDs. The super-condensed micro-lenses and Micro-OD design reduce the screen’s thickness and limit the halo effect, that luminous veil that sometimes appears around bright objects on a dark background. The result remains a compromise inherent to all LCD backlit technology: a very contained halo, but never the pixel-by-pixel black of a self-emissive panel.
An HVA panel built for contrast
The visible layer is based on an HVA panel. This type of panel, derived from VA, prioritizes high native contrast and deep blacks, where competing structures lean more toward viewing angle. An anti-reflective coating limits unwanted glare, which helps in a light-filled room.
This VA nature implies a well-known trade-off: the image is at its best when viewed straight on, and contrast perception degrades slightly at extreme side angles. For a living room where viewers are seated roughly face-on, the 85C7L fully exploits its black depth. The manufacturer rates a 178° viewing angle, but a central position remains the most flattering.
HDR formats and the TSR AiPQ engine
On the HDR side, the 85C7L supports the main market formats: HDR10+, Dolby Vision IQ, and HLG, complemented by IMAX Enhanced certification. Dolby Vision IQ adjusts the image according to ambient brightness, preventing scenes from appearing too dark in a well-lit room. Filmmaker Mode, for its part, disables unnecessary processing to stay true to the director’s intent. The panel renders gradients on an 8-bit base complemented by FRC, a temporal dithering technique that approaches the rendering of a 10-bit panel.
Processing is handled by the TSR AiPQ processor, which uses artificial intelligence to upscale content below 4K resolution. This primarily benefits broadcast channels and compressed videos, where the image gains sharpness without an overly heavy-handed look. Picture modes include Standard, Vivid, Sport, Movie, Filmmaker, Game, PC, and an Intelligent mode.
The 144 Hz panel for gaming
The panel runs natively at 144 Hz, a genuine advantage for PC and current-generation console gamers. VRR synchronizes the display to the source’s frame rate to eliminate tearing, across a range of 48 to 288 Hz thanks to DLG technology, which vertically divides the resolution to boost fluidity. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification and ALLM, which automatically switches to game mode, round out the package.
The HDMI 2.1 inputs accept a 4K signal at 144 Hz, enough to fully leverage a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. The Game Master suite brings together useful settings on screen, from a crosshair to a dedicated dashboard, with a Game Accelerator that pushes the refresh rate up to 288 Hz.
Sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen
The audio has been calibrated by Bang & Olufsen engineers. For a television of this size, the goal is to handle dialogue and music without the thin quality of overly lightweight sound sections, with dedicated modes that adjust the output to the content: Movie, Speech, Music, Game, Party, Sports, and a custom profile.
The 85C7L supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the two most widely used spatial audio formats in home theater. For a dedicated room or intensive cinema use, a separate speaker system remains well worth considering, as the built-in audio is primarily designed for everyday use.
Google TV, Gemini, and connectivity
The interface is Google TV, with the Google Assistant built in and hands-free voice control via the onboard microphone. TCL announces updates through Android 17, representing approximately three years of software support, along with the arrival of Gemini on the platform. The electronic program guide and HDMI CEC compatibility simplify daily use with connected peripherals.
Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.4, and AirPlay 2 for streaming from an Apple device. The 85C7L also plays the main file formats via USB, from H.265, AV1, or VP9 video up to 4K at 60 Hz, as well as photos in JPEG, PNG, or HEIF.
Footprint and wall mounting
At 188.8 cm wide and 34.1 kg without the stand, the 85C7L requires a carefully planned installation space. The chassis is no more than 58 mm thick, lending itself to a discreet wall mount on a VESA 600 x 400 mm bracket. When placed on furniture, it rests on a central stand adjustable in height by 30 mm, bringing the total weight to 36.6 kg.
On the energy side, power consumption peaks at 500 W and drops to 0.5 W in standby. The central stand allows for furniture narrower than the screen, provided it is stable and capable of supporting the total weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What differences are there compared with last year's C7K series?
The C7K was based on the seventh generation of Mini LED. The 85C7L moves to the eighth-generation SQD, with color gamut coverage that TCL claims reaches 100% of BT.2020 and enhanced work on halo effect reduction and color purity. Most of the claimed gains concern color accuracy and light control.
Is the 85C7L still readable in a very bright room?
Yes, under good conditions. The 3,000-nit peak brightness and the screen’s anti-reflective treatment help maintain high-contrast images in broad daylight. Dolby Vision IQ mode also adjusts the picture according to ambient light. Direct sunlight on the screen should still be avoided, as with any television.
What viewing distance would you recommend for a 215 cm screen?
For an 85-inch 4K screen, a viewing distance of around 2.5 to 3.5 m offers good comfort in most living rooms. The 4K resolution allows for a closer position than Full HD without revealing the pixel grid, so going down to around 2 m remains a viable option if you enjoy the immersive feel of a large format.
Can the 85C7L be used as a monitor for a PC?
Technically yes, thanks to PC mode and the 144 Hz panel. Still, 85 inches represents a considerable surface area at desk distance. This use is better suited to a living room PC or a setup where you sit several meters back.
Does the stand require a particularly wide piece of furniture?
No. The 85C7L uses a central stand, height-adjustable by 30 mm, allowing it to be placed on a piece of furniture narrower than the screen’s 188.8 cm width. The point to check is the sturdiness of the support, as the whole set weighs 36.6 kg with the stand.
Should you add a soundbar?
The Bang & Olufsen-tuned audio section is sufficient for everyday use, TV series, and news broadcasts. For action movies or more advanced home theater use, a soundbar or dedicated speaker system remains relevant, especially since the 85C7L already decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X tracks.
