Each year, dozens of European journalists gather to select the best electronic products of the year. Awarded by a diverse and impartial jury, the EISA (Expert Imaging and Sound Association) awards recognize exceptional products for their performance, design, or ergonomics.
AudioQuest’s DragonFly Cobalt is a portable digital-to-analog converter in a thumb-drive USB format. With a cobalt-blue metalized body, it upgrades the audio output of computers, smartphones, and tablets by delivering higher-quality conversion than built-in audio outputs. Compact and easy to use, it connects directly via USB and serves as an external sound card.
The DragonFly Cobalt employs an ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC chip, a component usually reserved for electronics costing several thousand euros. This chip features a minimum-phase slow roll-off filter—a deliberate technical choice that favors natural reproduction over clinical measurements. Compared with conventional filters, it yields an organically fluid timbre, particularly noticeable on acoustic instruments and voices.
Headphone amplification is handled by an ESS Sabre 9601 chip delivering 2.1 volts of output. This substantial power comfortably drives nearly all headphones on the market, from ultra-sensitive in-ear models to demanding 300-ohm over-ear headphones. The 64-bit bit-perfect digital volume control preserves signal integrity while offering surgical precision in level adjustment.
The Microchip PIC32MX274 microprocessor is a significant evolution over previous generations. Its 33% faster processing translates to smoother handling of audio streams, while reduced power consumption extends the battery life of connected mobile devices. This energy optimization allows about 16 hours of continuous listening on a modern smartphone—remarkable performance for a DAC of this capability.
The DragonFly Cobalt benefits from two exclusive technologies developed by Gordon Rankin, a legendary figure in USB digital audio. StreamLength technology establishes asynchronous transmission in which the DAC imposes its ultra-precise clock rather than relying on the often-unstable clock of the source device. This architecture virtually eliminates jitter—that temporal scourge that blurs rhythmic and spatial precision.
monoClock technology pushes this quest for timing accuracy even further. A single ultra–low-jitter clock, generated directly by the ES9038Q2M DAC chip, drives all converter and microcontroller operations. This perfect synchronization among all components creates temporal coherence that translates into remarkable stereo image stability and enhanced soundstage depth.
Power-supply filtering received special attention. In our EM-saturated environment, WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular interference constitute an invisible yet audible noise pollution. The Cobalt integrates sophisticated shielding that effectively rejects these parasites, preserving signal purity even in electromagnetically hostile environments.
The DragonFly Cobalt’s native USB-A format plugs directly into any Windows (7 and later) or Mac (OS 10.6.8 and newer) computer. Plug-and-play installation eliminates the need for proprietary drivers—a welcome simplicity in an era of growing technological complication. The operating system instantly recognizes the DAC as the preferred audio device.
Mobility is the Cobalt’s other playground. Compatible with iOS from version 5 and Android from Lollipop 5.0, it turns smartphones and tablets into portable audiophile sources. AudioQuest includes the DragonTail USB-C to USB-A adapter by default, an audiophile-grade cable featuring carbon-based noise dissipation technology. iOS users will need Apple’s Lightning to USB adapter, while some older Android devices may require a micro-USB OTG cable.
The 3.5 mm mini-jack output supports two distinct modes. In variable mode, the built-in volume control allows direct connection to powered speakers or a power amplifier. In fixed mode (volume at 100%), the line-level signal ideally feeds a preamplifier or a home theater amplifier, making the Cobalt a reference digital source for a complete hi-fi setup.
The DragonFly Cobalt accepts all audio formats, from modest MP3 to 24-bit/96 kHz high-resolution files. This apparent limitation to 96 kHz is a deliberate choice: AudioQuest prioritizes universal USB Audio Class 1 compatibility over chasing theoretical specs that require specific drivers. In practice, the vast majority of high-resolution catalogs remain accessible.
Native MQA support positions the Cobalt as an ideal companion for Tidal HiFi Plus subscribers. The multicolor LED beneath the dragonfly logo visually indicates the resolution of the decoded stream: green for 44.1 kHz, blue for 48 kHz, yellow for 88.2 kHz, light blue for 96 kHz, and the characteristic purple during MQA decoding. This visual cue reassures you of the integrity of the digital audio chain.
The Cobalt’s sonic signature favors naturalness and balance. Low frequencies gain definition and articulation over the DragonFly Red, with better separation among bass instruments. The midrange retains its corporeal density while revealing previously masked micro-details. The treble extends delicately, never tipping into stridency or listening fatigue, even during long sessions.
The DragonFly Cobalt crowns a lineage that began in 2012 with the first DragonFly, a true pioneer of portable USB DACs. That first generation created a new product category, proving that sonic excellence and miniaturization are not mutually exclusive. DragonFly Black and Red, launched in 2016, democratized mobile high-fidelity audio by drastically reducing power consumption for mobile-device compatibility.
Compared with the DragonFly Red, the Cobalt marks a subtle yet significant step forward. The soundstage expands in all three dimensions, creating a more believable, immersive acoustic space. Increased transparency reveals artists’ expressive intent with greater emotional acuity. Timbres sound more accurate and richer, with that hard-to-describe organic quality that’s instantly recognizable when heard.
DragonFly Black remains an excellent entry point into the AudioQuest universe, especially for easy-to-drive headphones. The Red represents a remarkable sweet spot between performance and investment. The Cobalt pushes the limits of what a DAC of this size can accomplish, justifying its premium positioning with technical sophistication and refined musicality.
The Cobalt comfortably drives headphones from 10 to 600 ohms thanks to its 2.1-volt output. Low-impedance models (32 ohms and under) benefit from exemplary control, while high-impedance headphones up to 300 ohms reach comfortable listening levels. Beyond that, a dedicated headphone amplifier is preferable to fully exploit very demanding headphones.
The Cobalt is surprisingly competitive with desktop DACs costing three to four times more in terms of pure sound quality. Its limitations are mainly connectivity (USB only) and maximum resolution (96 kHz). For headphone listening or as a source in a hi-fi system, its transparency and musicality challenge established price conventions.
The qualitative gap between Red and Cobalt is subtle but noticeable, particularly on revealing systems. The Cobalt offers greater transparency, a wider soundstage, and superior definition at the frequency extremes. For an already optimized system or demanding ears, the investment is justified. For a first step into high-fidelity audio, the Red remains an excellent choice.
Real-world tests show about 6% battery usage per hour on a modern Android smartphone, allowing a theoretical 16 hours of continuous listening. This remarkable energy efficiency results from the optimized PIC32MX274 microprocessor and intelligent power filtering. On tablets or laptops, the impact remains negligible.
Yes, AudioQuest provides the DragonFly Desktop Device Manager application for firmware updates. This upgradability ensures future compatibility with new formats or performance optimizations. Updates are rare but generally bring tangible improvements in stability or sound quality.
For Qobuz or Tidal, select the highest quality in the app settings. On a computer, favor WASAPI Exclusive (Windows) or Core Audio (Mac) modes to bypass the system mixer. Disable any audio processing (EQ, effects) in the player. The Cobalt takes care of the rest, revealing the unsuspected richness of high-resolution streaming catalogs.
Technically possible on consoles that accept USB audio (PlayStation 5, certain PC configurations), but the absence of surround processing limits its interest for gaming. The Cobalt excels at musical stereo reproduction rather than the spatialized effects processing of modern video games.
