TCL 55C8L
Overview
For a classic living-room size, 55 inches remains a safe bet, and this year TCL is bringing its most advanced backlighting technology in the mid-range segment. The 55C8L uses the QD-Mini LED panel from the Series 8, with a claimed peak brightness of 3,000 nits, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, and the Google TV interface. Enough to handle both everyday series and demanding HDR movies.
A QD-Mini LED picture focused on brightness
The 55C8L relies on Mini LED backlighting combined with quantum dots, which TCL refers to as Super Quantum Dot (SQD). The principle: a matrix of small diodes controlled by local dimming zones, rather than uniform lighting behind the panel. Dark parts of the picture stay deep while a nearby light source keeps its full intensity. Peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits on this screen size, and the claimed native contrast goes up to 6,000:1. Color coverage rises to 100% of the BT.2020 space, the widest target for current HDR content. The panel operates in 10-bit (8-bit plus FRC) and maintains 178° viewing angles, an area where LCD screens often fall short. An anti-reflective filter also limits unwanted reflections when the room is lit.
The AiPQ Pro engine and HDR support
Processing is handled by TCL’s AiPQ Pro processor, based on a quad-core A73 configuration. It manages the upscaling of content below 4K, noise reduction, and frame-by-frame image optimization according to the detected scene. The 55C8L supports all common HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision, the latter in its IQ version, which adjusts the picture to ambient light via the built-in sensor, and Gaming. The IMAX Enhanced label and Filmmaker Mode complete the list; this mode disables unnecessary processing to reproduce the picture as approved during editing. Several profiles are preset: Standard, Dynamic, Sport, Cinema, Filmmaker, Game, PC, and IMAX.
Refresh rate and gaming comfort
The panel runs natively at 144 Hz, a pace that benefits both the fast motion of action movies and recent games on console or PC. At a reduced resolution, a DLG mode pushes the refresh rate up to 288 Hz for gamers seeking maximum smoothness. The MEMC system, set at 120 Hz, interpolates intermediate frames to smooth pans and tracking shots. A dedicated Game mode lowers input lag, an advantage in titles where responsiveness matters.
An audio system tuned by Bang & Olufsen
As with the rest of the Series 8, the sound is tuned with Bang & Olufsen. The configuration used here is 2.1, with a total power output of 60 W and a dedicated bass channel. The 55C8L decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, two spatial audio formats capable of placing effects above and around the listener when the soundtrack allows it. On a flat TV, these formats still depend on the slimness of the chassis: sound performance clearly benefits from support by a soundbar or a separate system for home cinema.
Google TV and connected services
On the software side, the interface is Google TV, rich in streaming apps and equipped with built-in Google Assistant. Voice control works hands-free, without using the remote. The 55C8L includes Chromecast for streaming from a smartphone or computer, as well as AirPlay 2 compatibility for Apple devices. On the reception side, HbbTV support and the electronic program guide make access to terrestrial television and its associated services easier. Wireless connectivity uses Wi-Fi 6, more stable on a busy network, and Bluetooth 5.4 for headphones or a speaker.
Changes compared with the 2025 C8K
The C8L succeeds the C8K launched in 2025 and keeps the same approach: a high-end Mini LED offered at a more affordable price than the manufacturer’s flagship models. On the 55-inch model, peak brightness improves, from around 2,600 nits last year to 3,000 nits this year. The most tangible change is the panel: the new generation of quantum dots expands color coverage, which now approaches 100% of BT.2020 whereas the previous version remained behind. Backlight control also gains precision, with a higher number of dimming zones. The audio partnership with Bang & Olufsen, for its part, is renewed.
Dimensions, weight, and wall mounting
Without its stand, the 55C8L measures 1,226 × 709 × 56 mm and weighs 13.3 kg; placed on its central stand, it measures 1,226 × 760 × 270 mm and weighs 14.5 kg. Its 56 mm thickness makes it discreet once mounted on the wall. Mounting follows the VESA 300 × 300 mm standard, to be planned with a bracket suitable for the TV’s weight. On the power side, consumption peaks at 260 W and drops to 0.5 W in standby. The power supply accepts 220-240 V, 50-60 Hz mains power.

Frequently Asked Questions
What viewing distance should you plan for a 55-inch television?
To enjoy 4K resolution without noticing the pixel structure, a viewing distance of around 1.5 to 2 m works well for this screen size. Closer, the sharpness remains clear thanks to 4K; farther away, part of the resolution gain is lost.
Is the 55C8L suitable for a very bright room?
Its 3,000-nit peak brightness and anti-reflective filter help it retain impact in broad daylight. Note that the larger screen sizes in the series go higher in brightness and feature more dimming zones, a difference to keep in mind for a sun-drenched room.
Can the 55C8L be used as a monitor for a computer?
Yes. It has a PC mode and accepts a high-refresh-rate 4K signal, which makes it usable as a large desktop or gaming display. PC mode reduces image processing to minimize latency and preserve text sharpness.
Does Dolby Vision also work for video games?
Yes, the 55C8L supports Dolby Vision Gaming in addition to the Dolby Vision IQ used for movies and series. On a compatible console or PC, this enables Dolby Vision HDR with controlled latency.
What is the difference between native 144 Hz and 288 Hz mode?
Native 144 Hz applies at full 4K resolution. DLG mode, which reaches 288 Hz, operates at reduced resolution: the panel doubles its refresh rate at the expense of resolution. The first is suitable for most uses, while the second is intended for competitive gaming where every frame counts.
Which files does the USB media player support?
The 55C8L reads the main video containers and codecs, including H.264, H.265, VP9, and AV1, up to 4K at 60 Hz. It also supports MP3, WMA, and MKV audio files as well as JPEG, PNG, BMP, and HEIF photos.
How much memory and storage does the 55C8L have?
It comes with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This capacity is used for the Google TV system and app installation, providing comfortable headroom for everyday multimedia use.
