TCL 85C8L
Overview
On a 215 cm diagonal, even the slightest backlight flaw becomes visible. This very large format relies on TCL’s eighth-generation Mini LED, with 3,200 local dimming zones and a peak brightness rated at 6,000 nits. Enough to fill a wall with high-contrast images, whether in a very bright living room or in a darkened room for a movie night.
Eighth-generation Mini LED backlighting
The 85C8L belongs to TCL’s eighth generation of Mini LED backlighting, called SQD. The principle: blue diodes coupled with a high-concentration Quantum Dots layer, rather than RGB diodes. TCL claims that with the same number of LEDs, this approach triples the number of independently controllable zones and limits color leakage between neighboring sub-pixels, which the brand calls Color Cross Talk.
On this 85-inch model, the backlighting includes 3,200 local dimming zones and reaches up to 6,000 nits in HDR peak brightness. The panel, of the WHVA 2.0 type, delivers a native contrast ratio of 6,000:1, which zone-by-zone control further deepens in scenes combining deep blacks and highlights. The goal remains control of blooming, that light veil that sometimes surrounds a bright object against a dark background.
Full BT.2020 color coverage
The promise for color goes far: up to 100% of the BT.2020 color space, the widest standard used today for HDR video. Few televisions come close. The 85C8L relies on 10-bit processing, meaning 8 native bits complemented by FRC, to render gradients without visible banding, and on the high concentration of Quantum Dots to maintain saturated hues even when brightness rises. An anti-reflective filter completes the package and preserves color readability in a lit room.
Image processing handled by the AiPQ Pro processor
Behind the panel, an AiPQ Pro processor with four A73 cores handles real-time image analysis and optimization. It supports the major HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision IQ, along with IMAX Enhanced certification and Filmmaker Mode, which disables unnecessary processing to respect the director’s intent. Dolby Vision IQ adjusts the image according to the ambient light measured in the room.
Motion compensation, or MEMC, operates at 120 Hz to smooth pans and fast-moving scenes. The television offers eight preset picture modes (Standard, Dynamic, Sport, Cinema, Filmmaker, Game, PC and IMAX), to choose according to the content being watched.
An 85-inch format with almost no bezel
On this format, TCL reduces the frame to the bare minimum with its ZeroBorder design: the image occupies almost the entire surface, with a thin metallic trim surrounding the panel to reinforce it. Without the stand, the television measures 53 mm thick, a rare slimness for Mini LED backlighting of this density.
The bare chassis measures 1,880 mm wide by 1,073 mm high and weighs 38.9 kg. With its stand, allow for 1,179 mm in height and 41.6 kg, figures to keep in mind when choosing the furniture. Wall mounting complies with the VESA 600 × 500 mm standard; given the weight and size, a sturdy mount and installation by two people are recommended.
Sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen
The acoustic tuning is handled by Bang & Olufsen. The 85C8L includes a 2.1-channel 60 W system, with a dedicated bass channel to support low frequencies without an external subwoofer. It decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, two spatial audio formats that place sounds above and around the listener when the source allows it.
The Beosonic function, a signature of the Danish brand, lets you adjust the sound balance from a single circular interface, without diving into a detailed equalizer menu. For a large television installed far from any speakers, this integrated foundation already delivers decent sound performance.
The Google TV ecosystem for everyday use
The television runs on Google TV, which brings together streaming apps and recommendations in the same interface, with the Google Assistant accessible by voice, hands-free. Chromecast is built in for sending video from an Android smartphone, and AirPlay 2 does the same on the Apple side. The HbbTV standard and the electronic program guide support over-the-air television and catch-up TV.
For wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 ensure bandwidth and accessory pairing. The MT9655 platform is paired with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, a comfortable reserve for installing apps.
Gaming up to 288 Hz
For gamers, the panel supports 144 Hz natively and goes up to 288 Hz via DLG (Dual Line Gating) technology, which doubles the frequency by reducing vertical resolution. The television supports Dolby Vision Gaming, which combines dynamic HDR and low latency, as well as a dedicated Game mode. The HDMI 2.1 inputs carry high-frequency 4K signals from a recent console or a PC.
Be careful though: the very high frequencies come with a drop in resolution, so 288 Hz is therefore not native 4K. For 120 Hz in 4K, however, the connectivity and the panel handle it without difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the 85C8L differ from the 85C89L model?
Both references share the same eighth-generation SQD Mini LED backlight, the same number of zones, and the same peak brightness. The C89L is a variant of the C8L intended for certain distribution networks, with minor differences, most often cosmetic. In terms of picture performance, there is no notable difference to expect.
Where does the C8L series fit in the TCL range?
It sits above the C7L series, with more dimming zones and higher brightness, and below the X11L series, which remains the top-of-the-range model with a higher number of zones and a higher peak brightness. The C8L is aimed at achieving the right balance between backlight performance and a controlled price.
What viewing distance should you allow for an 85-inch screen?
To fully enjoy 4K resolution without perceiving the pixel structure, a viewing distance of 2.5 to 3.4 meters is suitable for most living rooms. Closer than that, the eye can distinguish more detail in native 4K content, but visual fatigue increases. Farther away, comfort remains excellent at the cost of a slightly reduced big-screen effect.
Is the television suitable for a recent game console?
Yes. The HDMI 2.1 inputs, native 144 Hz, Game mode, and Dolby Vision Gaming cover the needs of a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X in 4K at 120 Hz. The 288 Hz refresh rate, however, remains reserved for lower-definition content, designed more for competitive PC gaming.
Is a soundbar still useful with this model?
The 60 W 2.1 system tuned by Bang & Olufsen handles dialogue and ambience cleanly for a television. On an 85-inch screen installed in a large room, however, a soundbar or a dedicated system still delivers fuller bass and a wider soundstage, especially for action movies and Dolby Atmos tracks.
Is the 6,000-nit peak achievable across the entire image?
No, and this applies to all Mini LED televisions. This peak is measured over small bright areas, such as a reflection or a point light source against a dark background. On a completely white image, sustained brightness is much lower. It is precisely this localized power reserve that enhances the rendering of highlights in HDR.
