TCL 65C8L
TCL 65C8L: Mini LED SQD for bright living rooms
In 2026, TCL is pushing its Mini LED backlighting to an eighth generation, and this 65-inch model benefits from it without climbing all the way to the top of the range. The panel combines thousands of blue mini-diodes with quantum dots to gain brightness and color accuracy. Enough to stand up to daylight in the living room as well as the dark scenes of a movie, with sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen.
Backlighting that deepens contrast
It all starts with the backlighting. TCL divides the panel’s lighting into 2,040 independent dimming zones, each capable of switching off or increasing in intensity depending on the image. This local dimming displays a very bright area next to a very dark area without one bleeding into the other. Brightness climbs to as much as 5,000 nits in highlights, a level that gives HDR its full impact: a reflection on water or a summer sky stands out without looking washed out.
Rather than RGB diodes, TCL uses blue mini-diodes here paired with a new-generation quantum dot layer, Super Quantum Dot. The idea is to produce purer white light upstream, which limits color bleeding from one zone to another and reduces the light halo around bright objects on a black background. The anti-reflection filter, for its part, helps keep blacks readable when a window or lamp is reflected on the screen.
For color, the panel covers up to 100% of the BT.2020 space, the widest color space used today for video. In practice, deep reds, vegetation greens, and saturated blues stay within range instead of being clipped. The 10-bit coding (native 8 bits supplemented by FRC) smooths gradients and limits banding in skies or fades.
A slim chassis and almost no bezel
The 65C8L goes for understated design. Its frame is so discreet that TCL describes it as a “bezel-less” screen: a thin metallic trim surrounds the panel to reinforce it, but the image occupies almost the entire front. Without its stand, the TV is no more than 50 mm thick, made possible by the backlight’s Micro-OD optical design. Count on 1,434 mm in width, 824 mm in height, and 21.1 kg on the scale for the panel alone; with the stand, the whole unit rises to 890 mm high and 23.1 kg.
For wall mounting, the chassis uses the VESA 300 × 300 mm standard. Plan for a mount suited to this weight and, if you keep the stand, a piece of furniture wide enough: once installed, the base extends to 368 mm in depth.
Image processing handled by the AiPQ Pro processor
An AiPQ Pro processor, built around four A73 cores, drives real-time image analysis and optimization. It handles upscaling of lower-resolution sources, noise processing, and 120 Hz MEMC motion compensation, which interpolates intermediate frames to smooth panning shots and sports. This interpolation remains optional: it can introduce a “soap opera” effect in movies, and is disabled in the most faithful modes.
The 65C8L supports all the major HDR formats of the moment: HDR10 and its dynamic version HDR10+, the HLG used for TV broadcasts, and Dolby Vision in its IQ variant, which adjusts the image to the room’s ambient light. IMAX Enhanced certification and Filmmaker Mode, which switches off superfluous processing to respect the director’s intent, round out the picture. Preset picture modes range from Cinema to Filmmaker, including Sport, IMAX, and PC, each calibrated for a type of content.
Native 144 Hz for video games
For gamers, the panel natively supports 144 Hz in 4K, and goes up to 288 Hz via DLG (Dual Line Gate) technology, which doubles the frequency by dividing the vertical resolution. Game Mode reduces display latency, while Dolby Vision Gaming applies dynamic HDR rendering to compatible titles without sacrificing responsiveness. Whether it’s a recent console or a PC, the TV keeps up with fast-paced games; however, the switch to 288 Hz comes with a drop in resolution, best reserved for titles where smoothness alone matters.
Sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen
The audio system bears the Bang & Olufsen signature, in a 2.1 configuration: two stereo channels supported by a dedicated bass channel, for 60 W of power. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding reproduces soundtracks mixed for sonic depth, with effects placed overhead in compatible content. On built-in speakers, this placement remains suggested rather than fully spatialized; for an ambitious home theater setup, a speaker system or dedicated soundbar will take over.
Google TV and everyday connectivity
The interface is based on Google TV, which brings together streaming apps and offers recommendations based on your services. Google Assistant is integrated and responds hands-free by voice, without a remote control. Chromecast is built in for streaming from an Android smartphone, and AirPlay 2 does the same on the Apple side. HbbTV opens access to interactive channel services and the electronic program guide.
Wireless connectivity relies on Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, enough to connect headphones or earbuds with low latency. The MT9655 platform is paired with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, a comfortable reserve for apps and updates. The media player opens the main video formats (including AV1, H.265, or VP9), audio, and photo files from a USB flash drive, up to 4K at 60 Hz.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference compared with TCL's C7L series?
The C7L sits one step lower in TCL’s 2026 hierarchy. It retains a 144 Hz panel and the same gaming-oriented approach, but with fewer dimming zones and lower peak brightness. The C8L positions itself as the more accessible premium tier, below the X11L series that tops the range.
Does 144 Hz work well in 4K?
Yes, 144 Hz is native at 4K resolution, with no loss of resolution. The advertised 288 Hz is achieved through DLG technology, which reduces the vertical resolution to double the refresh rate: this mode is intended for very fast-paced games where smoothness takes priority over image detail.
How do I mount the 65C8L on the wall?
The television complies with the VESA 300 × 300 mm standard. Choose a wall mount rated for at least 21.1 kg, the weight of the panel without the stand. The 50 mm slimness of the chassis makes it easier to mount close to the wall.
Does the 65-inch model offer as many dimming zones as the larger screen sizes in the series?
No, and that’s logical: the number of zones and the brightness increase with the size of the panel. This 65C8L has 2,040 zones for 5,000 nits, whereas the 98-inch model in the same series reaches more than 4,000 zones and 6,000 nits. Smaller screen sizes, conversely, have fewer zones. The backlight technology and BT.2020 coverage, however, remain identical across the entire range.
Do you need a soundbar to take advantage of Dolby Atmos?
The TV properly decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X with its built-in 2.1 system, which is sufficient for everyday use. For truly immersive sound reproduction, with noticeable height effects, a compatible soundbar or speaker system remains preferable.
Which devices can be paired via Bluetooth?
Bluetooth 5.4 lets you connect headphones, earbuds, or a wireless keyboard. This recent version of Bluetooth reduces audio latency, which is useful for watching a movie or gaming with headphones without an annoying delay between picture and sound.
