Fixed Projection Screens

Fixed projection screens are designed for permanent projector installations, especially in dedicated home theater rooms. Featuring a tensioned fabric on an aluminum frame, they ensure optimal flatness and distortion-free image quality. Their rigid structure eliminates ripples for a stable projection surface. A permanent installation solution

A fixed projection screen is the benchmark for equipping a dedicated home theater room or a professional projection space. Unlike motorized or manual screens, it remains in place permanently and offers a projection surface that’s always available. Its metal frame, generally aluminum, keeps the fabric under tension via a spring or clip fastening system evenly distributed around the perimeter.

This constant tension guarantees a perfectly flat surface, eliminating any risk of ripples or creases. For demanding users, this impeccable geometry makes all the difference, particularly with 4K and 8K where the slightest irregularity becomes visible.

Structure and finishes

The aluminum frame of fixed screens is typically 8 to 12 cm wide and features a black velvet finish. This coating isn’t just aesthetic: it absorbs stray light and improves image contrast by preventing reflections on the frame edges. This black border visually delineates the projection area and enhances immersion, just like in a traditional movie theater.

Installation is via wall mounting using integrated brackets. The moderate weight of these screens makes them compatible with most walls, including lightweight partitions. Assembly is straightforward: simply put the frame together, attach the fabric with the supplied fasteners, then mount the assembly on the wall.

Available screen surfaces

Fixed screens come with different projection surfaces tailored to specific uses:

Standard matte white screens: Versatile, suitable for projection in a dark room with neutral gain (typically 1.0). They deliver faithful color reproduction and natural contrast.

ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screens: These technical surfaces reject ambient light, particularly from the ceiling, while preserving the brightness of the projected image. They allow projection in less controlled lighting conditions.

Acoustic (perforated) screens: Micro-perforated, they let sound pass through and allow you to place the front speakers and subwoofer behind the screen, as in a real movie theater. This setup offers coherence between the image and the sound source.

4K/8K certified screens: Their extremely smooth, “textureless” surface shows no visible grain. They preserve the finesse of ultra-high-definition images without degrading pixel sharpness.

High-gain screens: With a gain greater than 1.0 (often 1.3), they amplify projected light and compensate for less powerful projectors or very large screen sizes.

Formats and sizes

The 16:9 format largely dominates the fixed screen market, matching the current standard for home cinema, TV series, and the majority of films. 4:3 formats are still available for classic content, while 2.35:1 Cinemascope formats cater to cinephiles.

Sizes generally range from 80 to 180 inches (image width), with custom manufacturing options available. The ideal size depends on viewing distance and the resolution of the projector used.

Durability and maintenance

The absence of a motorized or roll-up mechanism gives fixed screens superior longevity. The fabric, kept under constant tension, doesn’t undergo repeated mechanical stress. Most screen materials are treated against yellowing, warping, and dust accumulation.

Maintenance is limited to occasional dusting with a microfiber cloth or a soft brush. For stains, gentle cleaning with appropriate products is usually sufficient.

Installation in a dedicated room

A fixed screen is a natural fit for a dedicated home theater setup where projection is the primary use of the space. Its permanent nature isn’t an issue since the screen becomes an integral part of the decor. Some models even offer curved versions to replicate premium cinema experiences, with uniform light distribution across the entire surface.

For installations in multipurpose living spaces, a fixed screen requires accepting its constant presence. However, its black frame and refined finish allow it to integrate as a decorative element, much like a painting.
